Travel Along And Enjoy Brisbane Australia PDF Print E-mail

Brisbane has always been a no show when it comes to coming to Australia especially when you have Sydney and Melbourne to mention. But as soon as you find out more of Brisbane, youll get to know that this little cousin of Sydney and Melbourne is a sure fun place to travel to.

Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, is midway up the east coast of Australia - 27.5oS, 153oE. With the Gold Coast to the south and the Sunshine Coast to the north, domestic and international airports, Brisbane is an ideal command center for an Australian holiday. Brisbane and Queensland preserve Eastern Standard Time all year. Southern states use daylight saving (summertime) which means there is a one hour difference between Queensland and New South Wales during summer. The home currency is Australian dollars and the smallest coin in use is the 5 cent coin.

No doubt the sluggish subtropical climate, softly curving Brisbane River, and rich cultural flavors of its many neighborhoods also have something to do with its appeal. But more often than not, people love Brisbane for the reason that its a ritzy city with a down-to-earth mind-set and home to some of the friendliest locals in Oz.

It may be Australias third-largest city, but for the longest time Brisbane was seen as something of a poor cousin to Sydney and Melbourne: a sleepy country town hiding behind a big city faade. Of course locals have always known that Brissie offers the perfect way of life and it doesnt take guests long to appreciate why. In spite of the transformation into a sleek, cosmopolitan city complete with world-class art galleries, a booming live music scene and a fabulous caf culture, Brisbane still retains the laid-back, easy attitude of a small society.

Residents and visitors to Brisbane benefit from a wide range of landscapes and lifestyles. The inner-city, metropolitan Brisbane is bounded by leafy, sometimes very hilly, suburbs. Further out in the suburbs, the traditional Australian house on a large block or even acreage dominates.

Moreton Bay and its islands offer water sports, sailing and sea-side suburbs. The Pacific Highway leads south to the Gold Coast and its well-known surf beaches. North is the seaside town of Redcliffe, the rainforest and picturesque landscape of Pine Rivers, Caboolture, and the Glasshouse Mountains. Bribie Island offers the first surf beach to the north. The Sunshine Coast towns and hinterland are popular holiday spots. Travelling west of Brisbane, past Ipswich, you shortly go up the Great Dividing Range to Toowoomba and the rich plains of the Darling Downs.
