Sealing Terrazzo PDF Print E-mail
The smartest way to prevent stains on your terrazzo is to treat the stone with a protective sealer.  Sealing, or impregnating, your terrazzo floors is a critical step in the terrazzo restoration process.  Once you’ve had your terrazzo polished and restored, It’s wise to seal or impregnate the terrazzo.  Keep in mind that terrazzo is formed of marble, and marble takes millions of years to be created.  Yet one spill or stain can instantly ruin the beautiful finish.

Terrazzo is a porous stone, and therefore stains can easily occur because the staining substance is absorbed into the terrazzo.  An impregnator, or sealer, works by filling in the pores of the stone that naturally exist which repels spilled substances.  If possible, when a spill occurs, quickly blot the liquid substance using a terry towel.  If your stone is impregnated, the substance won’t have a chance to stain the terrazzo.

Considering the location and usage of the terrazzo is helpful in deciding whether to use sealer.  Impregnating your terrazzo may result in a slight enhancement, or darkening, in the color of the terrazzo.  It is highly recommended that terrazzo floors be sealed.  Only a few ounces of impregnator are needed to protect your terrazzo for years to come.
